The beach strip

Bamburi is where the hotels concentrate, and that shapes what we see. Guests arrive having done more physical activity in four days than in the previous four months (snorkelling, watersports, long beach walks) and something protests. Staff arrive with the shoulder and back problems that come from housekeeping, kitchen work and long shifts on hard floors.

Beach running

The single most common local injury pattern. Soft sand strips out the elastic return you get from firm ground, so the calf and Achilles absorb far more work. Add the camber of a tideline, which effectively lengthens one leg, and you get predictable one-sided calf, Achilles and knee problems.

None of it means stopping. It usually means varying the surface, alternating direction, and building calf capacity before adding distance.

Questions from Bamburi patients

Do you visit the Bamburi hotels?

Regularly, both guests who have hurt themselves and staff who need treatment around shift patterns.

I run on Bamburi beach and my Achilles hurts. Why?

Soft sand makes the calf and Achilles work considerably harder per stride than firm ground does, and running along a sloping tideline loads one leg differently from the other. Both are extremely common causes here.

How quickly can you get to Bamburi?

Ten to fifteen minutes from the clinic, so usually at short notice.
