The first six weeks
Scar tissue matures, joints stiffen into whatever position they are held, and muscle around an operated limb wastes fast. What happens in the first six weeks sets a ceiling that is hard to raise afterwards: knees especially, which stiffen readily and resist being freed later.
Which is when travel is worst
You cannot drive, sitting is painful, and on this coast the journey to a clinic may involve a creek crossing or a long stretch of the strip. That combination is why people fall behind their protocol precisely when being on schedule matters most.
So we run this as a home visit service by default, and treat getting to you as part of the job rather than your problem to solve.
The phases

Skipping ahead is the commonest self-inflicted setback. So is stopping at phase three because the pain has gone.

When should rehabilitation start?
Usually within days, and for joint replacements often before you leave hospital. Delay is the most common cause of a stiff result.
Can you come to me while I cannot drive?
Yes, and this is exactly when it matters most. The first weeks after surgery are when travel is hardest and when consistency makes the biggest difference.
How long until I am back to normal?
For a knee replacement, three to six months for comfortable daily function and up to a year for the final result. We will give you the timeline for your specific operation.
