Stroke Recovery

Rehabilitation at home across the coast: because frequency over months drives recovery, and the journey is what usually stops it.

Common symptoms

  • , Weakness or paralysis on one side
  • , Difficulty walking or balancing
  • , Loss of arm and hand function
  • , Increased muscle tone or spasticity
  • , Difficulty with speech or swallowing

Common causes

  • , Interruption of blood supply to part of the brain
  • , Bleeding within the brain

What recovery actually involves

The damaged brain tissue does not regrow. Recovery comes from reorganisation, other areas taking over function, and that is driven by repeated, specific, demanding practice of the movements you want to regain.

So rehabilitation is repetitive by necessity. Hundreds of repetitions of a reach, a step, a sit-to-stand. The skill is in choosing which movements matter and grading them to stay both achievable and hard.

Why we come to you

Two reasons, and the second is the important one.

First, practising in your own home transfers better: your doorways, your bathroom, your steps, the chair you actually use.

Second, and decisively: travel is what ends stroke rehabilitation early. A family on this coast bringing someone to a clinic twice a week for six months, across a bridge or along the strip, rarely sustains it. Recovery then stalls, and everyone concludes the patient plateaued when in fact the treatment stopped.

The family’s part

Whoever provides daily care gets taught properly: safe transfers, positioning, and how to encourage without taking over. Doing too much for someone recovering from a stroke slows their recovery. That is a hard thing for families to hear and an important thing for them to know.

How we treat it

  • , Task-specific repetitive practice
  • , Walking and balance retraining
  • , Arm and hand rehabilitation
  • , Transfer training for patient and family
  • , Speech and swallowing therapy
  • , Home setup and equipment advice

Typical recovery: Fastest in the first 6 months; gains continue well beyond a year

See a doctor urgently if you have

  • !Sudden new weakness, facial droop or speech difficulty: call emergency services immediately
  • !Sudden severe headache
  • !Sudden loss of vision or balance

These are not physiotherapy problems. Go to a doctor or hospital rather than booking with us.

Treatments that help

Common questions

There is not much stroke rehabilitation on the coast. Is that right?

Provision is thinner here than in Nairobi, and many families end up managing recovery at home with no professional input. That gap is a large part of why we offer this, and why we deliver it at home rather than expecting people to travel.

How often are sessions needed?

Two to three times a week over a sustained period achieves far more than occasional intensive bursts. Consistency is the variable that matters most.

It has been over a year. Is there any point?

Yes. Recovery is fastest early, but improvements in walking, balance and daily function are well documented years later, especially for people who never received structured rehabilitation in the first place.

Can you help with speech as well?

Yes. Speech, language and swallowing difficulties are common after stroke and we offer therapy for them alongside the physical rehabilitation, so families are not assembling care from separate providers.
