Independence is the goal
Not athletic performance. Getting out of a chair unaided, managing the step at the door, walking to the gate, using the bathroom safely, not being afraid at home. All of those are trainable, and they respond to well-prescribed exercise at any age.
Falls prevention
A fall is rarely just a fall. It fractures hips, triggers hospital admissions, and frightens people into moving less, which weakens them and makes the next fall more likely. Breaking that cycle early is among the highest-value things physiotherapy does.
We assess balance and strength properly, walk the house looking at lighting, thresholds, mats and bathroom safety, and target the specific weakness rather than advising someone vaguely to be careful.
Heat and hydration
Worth saying plainly because it matters here: older adults dehydrate faster, and dehydration causes dizziness, which causes falls. Coast heat makes this a genuine and frequently overlooked contributor. We build fluid intake and exercise timing into the plan.

Common questions
Is exercise safe at his age?
Strength and balance training is well evidenced and safe for older adults when properly prescribed, including into the eighties and nineties. The risk of doing nothing is higher: muscle loss accelerates, and with it the risk of a fall.
She refuses to do exercises. Can you still help?
Usually. Resistance is generally about dignity or fear of falling rather than unwillingness. We start with what matters to her (getting out of her own chair, walking to the gate) because purpose motivates where an exercise sheet does not.
Can you check the house for hazards?
Yes, on the first visit. Loose mats, poor lighting, a bathroom with nothing to hold. Small changes here prevent serious injuries.
I live abroad and my parent is here. Can you keep me updated?
Yes. A good number of our older patients have family overseas, and we are used to keeping them informed about progress and concerns.
